The Elder Caregiving Program supports caregivers as they care for their spouses, parents and friends who are over 60 years of age. Support Services help to prevent caregiver burnout and are proven to delay nursing home placement. The Elder Caregiving Information and Assistance and Respite services are available in 14 counties.
These include Albany, Columbia, Delaware, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington Counties.
Planned and Emergency Respite Services
This service includes limited annual grants to fund home care, adult day care and facility-based service as well as partial reimbursement for respite that you have arranged to be provided at home informally and paid for out-of-pocket. Contact our office to learn how to access these and our emergency respite services.
Information & Assistance
Caregivers are provided with helpful information and linked with community support services. Our website also offers a lengthy listing of resources.
Several types of support services are in place to help caregivers. These include professionally facilitated support groups in Albany and Rensselaer counties, telephone coaching and counseling by staff, peer-to-peer mentoring, a chat room on our website, and a quarterly newsletter for all 14 counties in the region and County approved client and home assessments for those living in Albany County.
Periodically through out the year the Elder Caregiving Program offers community education on the topic of caregiving. At times the agency also arranges for experts in various topics to come and speak at our support groups. These meetings are often open to the public so that all can join in learning about relevant caregiving topics.
